===Publishers or Distributors===
It can be difficult to distinguish publishers from distributors when there is no notation. If the "publisher" name seems to differ from the yarn brands used or shown, it might actually be the distributor. Distributors generally stock, market, and sell products for overseas companies--and to further complicate things, they may add their own labeling.

This issue can be impossible to solve definitely. Check OCLC in case the item has been previously cataloged and compare the details, keeping in mind a US distributor will likely be different from one located in Canada or elsewhere. For example, [http://www.eisakunoro.com/ Noro] (made in Japan) is distributed by [http://www.knittingfever.com/c/noro/yarn/ Knitting Fever] in the US and by [http://www.diamondyarn.com/d/noro/ Diamond Yarn] in Canada. Try a quick Google or Ravelry search, if time permits.

Yarn companies often publish patterns designed to use their own yarn lines. If the pamphlet does not list any publication information, put the yarn company name in square brackets and include it in 260 $b, perhaps like this:
260 __ $a [S.l. : $b Noro]

===Personal names or Corporate names===
Common places to check for pattern designer information:
*cover (front or back)
*title page or verso
*table of contents
*at the head (or end) of a pattern

As mentioned above, yarn companies often publish pattern collections that center around their yarn lines. Some give credit to their designers, but many do not.
*If there is no designer name listed in any of the common sources listed above, then use the yarn company name as a corporate name main entry in 110.
*If an editor is listed, but there are many individual designers named in the collection, it might be better to place the editor's name under a 700 added entry for personal names. Another way to look at this would be: how many of the patterns (or written material) were contributed by the editor?
*If a designer is listed as the author or has credit for most of the included patterns, that information should be included in a 100 main entry.

Yarn companies sometimes change names, go out of business, or are merged into others. Check corporate name authority records carefully when selecting a match. Corporate name authorities may exist for each name change (with see also references). If this is the case, be sure to select the one that most closely matches the information printed in the pamphlet. If there is limited information available, estimate the age of the pamphlet from the enclosed photographs, design, or garment style.

*Bernat Yarn & Craft Corp. (no 99031308) - this record includes a 510 reference:
*Emile Bernat & Sons Co. (no 95054664)

The brand or company name should be used in the 110/710 coporate name entries and in the series statement more often than as part of the main title entry. If the titles are arranged on the cover or title page in an unusual fashion, use 246 title variant to help improve searching results.

====Using Ravelry as a resource====
[http://www.ravelry.com Ravelry], an online fiber arts community, includes a virtual database of books, pamphlets, and many related things. The site is free, but does currently require a login to access many areas. It is an excellent resource to consult or search when trying to identify a pamphlet or needing more information. A few differences exist in how Ravelry maintains or displays information, because it is a database rather than a library catalog. It is important to be aware of and adjust for these differences.

#Ravelry tries to maintain a single authority record for each designer name, and always refers to them as designers. For this reason, corporate names are often appended with "Design Team" or "Design Studio." Some designer listings are accompanied by explanatory notes, but many simply show the most standard format and related patterns. Doing a '''designer search''' may help with determining whether a name was ever used by a certain company.
[[File:Ravdesignerss.jpg|center]]

#If researching or trying to identify a booklet on Ravelry, be aware that the following format (or slight variants) is commonly used for their main entry.
BrandName #BookletNumber, BookletTitle

===Monographs, Series, and Vertical Files===

Whether to catalog the pamphlet as a monograph or series may depend on policy. Generally, many do have distinctive titles, and many are part of a general (or themed) series put out by a yarn company.

Many pamphlets are smaller or less sturdy than books, and libraries may hesitate to keep them on shelves. If housing pattern pamphlets in vertical files, they still can be cataloged per the information and resources given in this toolbox.

: $b Noro]

===Personal names or Corporate names===

====Using Ravelry as a resource====

1. Ravelry tries to maintain a single authority record for each designer name, and always refers to them as designers.

2. If researching or trying to identify a booklet on Ravelry, be aware that the following format (or slight variants) is commonly used for their main entry.
BrandName #BookletNumber, BookletTitle

===Monographs, Series, and Vertical Files===

Doing a '''designer search''' may help with determining whether a name was ever used by a certain company.

===Monographs or Series===

Whether to catalog the pamphlet as a monograph or series may depend on policy. Generally, many do have distinctive titles, and many are part of a general (or themed) series put out by a yarn company.

===Publishers or Distributors===

: $b Noro]

===Personal names or Corporate names===

====Using Ravelry as a resource====

Ravelry tries to maintain a single authority record for each designer name, and always refers to them as designers. For this reason, corporate names are often appended with "Design Team." Some coporate designer listings are accompanied by explanatory notes, but many simply show the most standard format and related patterns. An examination of this pamphlet should provide the following details:
*yarn brands '''Regia''' and '''Schachenmayr Nomotta''' (front)
*yarn name '''Bamboo Color''' (front)
*titles '''Kreativ''', '''Regia Bamboo Color keeps its Balance''' (front)

This might be challenging for someone who has absolutely no knowledge of yarns or sock knitting. 'Kreativ' is printed in all capital letters, which is a big hint as to its importance. Whether cataloging this as a series or as a monograph issue of a series, don't neglect this important detail.

The photographs of the yarn skein clearly show its name. Thus 'Regia Bamboo Color keeps its Balance' could then be regarded as the issue title.

*publisher or distributor '''Westminster Fibers''' (back)
*publisher or distributor location '''Nashua, NH'''

Because of the two yarn names, and the pamphlet focus on this specific yarn, it is likely the yarn company is the publisher, and the address on the back is the distributor.

*leaflet number '''No.57''' (front)

*illustrations, mostly black and white photographs
*written instructions, charts, and tables
*socks

A possible ''monograph'' record for this leaflet could look like:
110 2_ $a Schachenmayr Nomotta.
245 10 $a Kreativ : $b Regia Bamboo Color keeps its balance.
==== Knitting and Crochet Resources ====

Ravelry. http://www.ravelry.com (accessed April 20, 2010).

An excellent source for anything knitting or crochet related. The pattern and yarn databases are created and maintained by volunteers, so there are some differences from how libraries might catalog items. Even so, try searching this website when working with unusual or unfamiliar pattern pamphlets. Membership is currently required to access most areas, but it is free.

Ravelry. “Ravelry Editors.” Ravelry. http://www.ravelry.com/groups/ravelry-editors (accessed April 20, 2010).

The Ravelry Editors are a helpful bunch of volunteers who have spent time in Ravelry’s pattern and yarn database trenches. If working with a unusual or rare pattern pamphlet, try searching the group’s forum or posting questions.

Vintage Knits. “Discontinued Yarn Charts.” Vintage Knits. http://www.vintageknits.com/yarncharts.html (accessed April 20, 2010).

If a pattern pamphlet somehow lacks any kind of brand name, it might be possible to identify the company by means of the yarn name. These charts from Vintage Knits are useful for older yarns, but beware, some yarn names are very common—nearly every brand has had a Pompadour line.

Pattern pamphlets are often reprinted or reproduced; these require some extra information in the bibliographic description.

Pelzer, Nancy L. “Cataloging Monographic Serial Analytics: From Feast to Famine.” The Serials Librarian 47 (2005): 3, 12-136.

The first half of this article contains a useful summary and background information about analyzable serials and the contrasting benefits and costs.

Reynolds, Regina Romano. “Continuing Resources: FAQ and Fiction, Present and Future.” ICBC 34 (2005): 8-13.

Definitions and explanations for Serials, Continuing Resources, and Integrating Resources. May be helpful for determining whether a knitting pattern pamphlet is part of a series and the possible cataloging approach.

===Working with Pamphlets===
''Since pamphlets are generally smaller or more fragile than books, some libraries or institutions may prefer to keep them in vertical files, and may disregard the benefits of cataloging them. These authors describe how their libraries maintain pamphlet collections.''

Aked, Michael J. “Building and Maintaining an Academic Library Pamphlet Collection.” Collection Building 15 (1996): 22–31.

An overview of approaches for cataloging or dealing with pamphlets.

Lowther, Stephen. “Managing and cataloguing ephemera collections.” Art Libraries Journal 31 (2006): 9-13.

One library’s approach for dealing with an ephemera collection. Includes basic guidelines for cataloging with AACR2.

Thomas, Joy. “Rejuvenating the Pamphlet File in an Academic Library.” Library Journal (1985) 43-45.

Thomas describes a compromise between cataloging pamphlets and keeping them in vertical files. Library of Congress Subject Headings were assigned to files for easier reference as a process of standardization. Creating and maintaining a collection development policy for pamphlets, Thomas asserts, is as important as it is for books and other materials. Also essential is raising awareness of the materials’ existence.

===Publishers or Distributors===

: $b Noro]

===Personal names or Corporate names===

====Using Ravelry as a resource====

Ravelry tries to maintain a single authority record for each designer name, and always refers to them as designers, even when it might be a corporate name. Some are accompanied by explanatory notes, but many simply show the most standard format and a listing of related patterns. Doing a '''designer search''' may help with determining whether a name was ever used by a certain company.

(GET SCREENSHOT of an example)

If researching or trying to identify a booklet on Ravelry, be aware that the following format (or slight variants) is commonly for main entry.
Brand name booklet number, booklet title

===Monographs or Series===

Whether to catalog the pamphlet as a monograph or series may depend on policy. Generally, many do have distinctive titles, and many are part of a general (or themed) series put out by a yarn company.

Pattern pamphlets are not difficult to catalog. By using this overview, a cataloger should be able to examine a pattern pamphlet and identify important details to include in a record.

==What are pamphlets?==
Pamphlets are ''smaller'' or ''shorter'' than books. They may be:
*individual sheets
**(sometimes folded like a brochure)
*a few pages stapled together
*'''booklets''' of about 10-30 pages, usually with one of these types of bindings:
**saddle-stitched
**perfect
They also may be identified as '''ephemera''', '''grey''' (or '''gray''') '''literature''', '''broadsides''', or '''leaflets'''.

In the knit/crochet community, '''leaflets''' are commonly used to describe individual patterns consisting of single sheets or a few pages stapled together, whereas '''pamphlets''' or '''booklets''' usually refer to pattern collections about 10-30 pages in length.

'''Important Note:''' Some pamphlets are issued ISBNs (International Book Serial Numbers). Common publishers or yarn companies that do this include American School of Needlework, Bernat, Leisure Arts, and Patons.

Chapter 2 "Books, Pamphlets, and Printed Sheets" is most relevant for bibliographic description of pattern pamphlets. Depending on your library or institution's policy regarding series, Chapter 25 "Uniform Titles" may also be helpful. And if working with a series that cannot be analyzed (the title is always the same), refer to Chapter 12 "Continuing Resources."

===MARC===
Some MARC fields to keep in mind (with corresponding AACR2R rules in parentheses)
*300 (2.5 - Physical Description, particularly 2.5C - Illustrative matter, 2.5D - Dimensions)

Knitters and crocheters appreciate knowing whether the pattern instructions are given in chart or written format (or both). Using 'ills.' in $b is insufficient; please follow up with a Note (below).

*490 / 830 (2.6B - Series Statement)
**830 - Uniform Title - creates an added entry for the uniform series title (usually justified by a series statement in 490).
Knitting and crochet pattern pamphlets are not always well described; this toolbox gives an overview of things to look for and how to catalog them. A few extra details to include in the record are recommended; the extra work is minimal and is balanced by the improved information and access.

Pattern pamphlets are not difficult to catalog. By using this overview, a cataloger should be able to examine a pattern pamphlet and identify important details to include in a record. It is a good idea and to list a few extra details about pamphlets in order to improve access to these materials because knitters often look for specific information when selecting patterns for their projects.

It is better to include the name with the series subtitle (below) rather than in the title entry.
If no designer is listed (or many designers are credited), use the authority listing for the company as corporate main entry (110 field).
However, if researching or trying to identify this booklet on Ravelry, they use 'Brand name, booklet number, and booklet title' formatting as their main entry.

Chapter 2 "Books, Pamphlets, and Printed Sheets" is most relevant for bibliographic description of pattern pamphlets. Depending on your library or institution's policy regarding series, Chapter 25 "Uniform Titles" may also be helpful.

===MARC===

Using 'ills.' in $b is not sufficient; please follow up with a Note (below).

*490 / 830 (2.6B - Series Statement)
**830 - Uniform Title - creates an added entry for the uniform series title (usually justified by a series statement in 490).

===Subject Headings===
The best match Library of Congress Subject Headings are '''Knitting''' (sh 85072707) and '''Crocheting''' (sh 85034198). Some specialty subject headings are available, including '''Knitted lace''' (sh 85072705) or '''Doilies''' (sh 85038834).

*'''Do''' utilize the '''Patterns''' subdivision (lcsh 85098793)
*'''Do''' use '''geographic''' subdivisions whenever the pattern pamphlet focuses on a specific ethnic style (such as Estonia or Fair Isle)
*Do '''NOT''' use the subject heading Knitted goods, as it refers to the end product, not patterns.
